A place for people interested in introspection, self awareness, mindfulness, meditation and training the mind to abide in a state that is free from the constant flow of meaningless chatter, mind theatrics, and discursive thought.

Is having a quiet mind the same as being enlightened?

Is a silent mind, one that is free from discursive thought and mind theatrics the same as enlightenment? This is like asking if water is the same as the ocean. Water can exist separate from the ocean but the ocean can not exist without water. Likewise, one can have a mind that is capable of not thinking without being enlightened, but one can not be enlightened with a mind that is full of chatter. The constant flow of discursive thoughts and daydreams, and all of the anxieties and various emotional components that go along with it act as a barrier that keeps one from experiencing the enlightened nature of pure consciousness that already exists within each one of us. It is for this reason that anyone serious about an enlightened path should learn to quiet the mind through practicing self awareness until only pure awareness is left.
